Spaces of my colors

Elective module

Course

We will immerse ourselves in color spaces, our own and those of others…

We associate diverse experiences with every color. These are called to mind by the context in which we perceive and perceived a particular color. The context defines the color’s effect. We will attempt to find words, associations, betake ourselves on a color journey: studying the symbolic and cultural impact of color sensations, and also getting to know ourselves in terms of the psychological, cultural, and political effects colors have on us—and thus, the effect that has been passed down and learned.

Our task is to detect and name unconscious reactions and associations. Neon green: hope? Hope is green, most people I asked agreed, but more likely turquoise green or corn green certainly not neon green. No one describes the green of a cucumber as emerald green or the green of an artichoke as army green. Conversely, no one describes an emerald as spinach green, even though spinach really is emerald green…words should be followed by deeds…

In SPACES OF MY COLORS we will use photos we bring to abstract and interpret color resonances and translate these onto canvas by painting them, accompanied by our own color diaries, which will help us to develop our own very own color archive, our own color vocabulary…
